The ZoneCasting system allows FM radio broadcast signals to be separated into several geographic Zones within their main FCC legal Contour. These “zones” can be various geographic regions of a large metropolitan area, individual markets within a larger market (e.g. San Francisco/Oakland/San Jose) or smaller markets within a region (e.g. Roanoke/Lynchburg). ZoneCasting provides a technology that allows the broadcaster to send different content to each of the zones within their contour. Since the spots are no longer broadcast across the entire market, customers they can be sold for a portion of the traditional cost – the broadcaster is receiving revenue for several spots being run in separate zones at the same time, and thus can charge a more affordable rate for each spot.
A typical station has about 500 current customers but there are typically some 2,100 unique advertisers in a typical top metro. Geo-targeting opens the market for radio stations to work with potentially hundreds of local advertisers who need to reach part of the market, but not the whole market, increasing station’s customer base with an exponential new opportunity.
The ZONE maps included here are conceptual samples. Actual ZONES in a real situation will be dependent on the broadcaster’s service contour, demographics, tower availability, terrain and propagation factors, etc. GBS will work with client stations to customize a design based the broadcaster’s objectives and the above mentioned issues.
The GBS team, in a partnership with the license holders and GatesAir Corporation, will work to maximize the ZoneCasting opportunity for all of the participating stations.
