UK’s “Split Services” Approved for Separate and Localized Use in Radio

We viewed from across “the pond” Ofcom’s decision this week to allow community radio stations to offer “split services” that will provide separate advertising and identification to areas within a broadcaster’s signal.

Of course, these split services are not provided through the same booster technologies of ZoneCasting™, but the needs of UK radio broadcasters and listeners are clearly similar to that of ours in the U.S.

Applause goes to the progressive minds at Ofcom, the UK’s communications regulator, that clearly recognizes the competitive market and the benefits of providing hyper-localized content to the zones within their broadcast signal.

As noted in the article, the benefits of the new agreement will include giving listeners a more “local” feel to their station, giving advertisers an even more focused market, and allowing community stations to offer more cost-effective advertising options across their network, supporting further station growth and development.
